France was still executing people by guillotine when the first Star Wars movie came out.

The guillotine is famous for bringing about a swift, terrifying death and for being used mainly in France to execute any and everyone no matter your class, wealth, or status. Physician Joseph-Ignace Guillotin proposed to use this form of execution as a more "humane" way to punish those who did unforgivable acts.

There were so many who were executed by this device when it became wildly popular during June 1793 to July 1794 that the time period was known as the"Reign Of Terror." Not even Marie Antoinette or her husband King Louis XVI were spared.

Even after the Reign Of Terror, France continued to use the guillotine as their main form of execution for basically a little less than a century.

Its long reign of terror came to an end in 1981 when France abolished the death penalty.

The last person to be executed by guillotine was murderer Hamida Djandoubi on September 10, 1977. This happened, literally, a few months after the world celebrated the May 25th premiere of Star Wars IV: A New Hope.
